The exit drive from "A" Lot to the "C" and "D" Lots and Vollmer Rd. has been completed. This will allow access to the traffic signal located at Halsted and Volmer or to traverse West on Vollmer. This exit drive has been established for one way traffic, north to Vollmer. We have ordered the proper one way signs for the new exit road and will authorize its use as quickly as we can have them installed. We are in the process of installing new evacuation signs on each floor hallway of the Campus. Take a moment to look at the primary and secondary exit routes for your area of the building. You will also note the location of the evacuation chairs for the handicapped persons, fire pulls and extinguishers.

Security Tip: Pleas take the time to assure that the class room doors and office room doors are securely closed when leaving. Don't invite the theft(s) of personal property from your car, classroom or office by leaving them in plain view or/and unsecure

You may now use the "cut through" drive to access Vollmer Rd. and the Halsted St. traffic signal. As I mentioned in my last notice, this exit drive has been established for one-way vehicular traffic, North to Vollmer. We will continue to open the rear gates for exit from the "A" lot every evening. An evacuation drill is coming. We'll let you know the date and provide instructions prior to that date. Meanwhile take a look at the evacuation routes in your offices and classrooms and in the hallways to familiarize yourself with the exit routes.

I would like to commend Sgt. Bill Gaffney for his excellent work in completing the very accurate and detailed evacuation plans in the hallways. He and Deputy Director of Campus and Public Safety Strat Westgate spent many, many hours pulling the project together.

Please, please, we need volunteers for out "Halloween Fest" which is really a great event the Campus and Public Safety Department sponsors each year. We will provide more public safety education, this year along with the usual high doses of sugar, trinkets and games for the children.. Call Strat Westgate at 3647.

Security Tip: As winter approaches and its darker much earlier, please use caution when leaving the building and in the parking lots. Don't hesitate to call security for an escort. Report suspicious persons immediately

Yes, we really do need volunteers for the "Halloween Fest" on 31 Oct 03. It's only 2 hours of your time. Once you see the faces of the many happy children you'll know why we continue to do this each year. Please call Strat Westgate at 3647 and sign up.

Some of you may have seen the article in the school newspaper suggesting that our Security Department evolve as a Police Department. Dr. McCarthy has authorized a survey and feasibility study by an outside consultant to make recommendations to the College Administration. I am actively working with the consultant and providing statistical information. Please be assured that I will keep you informed as we work through the process.

Meanwhile our Security Officers are continuing with the in-service training sessions on a variety of subjects to better understand their role in the Public Safety profession. Everyone was recently re-certified in CPR/AED and First Aid procedures. We do frequent refresher Training in CPR/AED and First Aid. Other topics have included Basic Report Writing, Criminal Law, a whole series on the Use of Force, Team Building and many other topics, designed to advance our skills

Parking in the Staff and Faculty lots should be much better, as we have written 382 citations in an effort to educate violators. We are looking at ways to alleviate that and other parking concerns throughout the campus. I will work with the College Councils in making recommendations.

Security Tip: If you work in one of the "smart rooms" please use care to secure the doors when finished and please don't use card board of other means to keep the door from locking.

The "Halloween Fest" was another hugh success due to the hard work of all our volunteers. Big, big thanks to the SGA who came early and stayed for the long haul.

We are experiencing another shortage of security officers due to the illness of one officer and family matters of another. There will be a period of adjustment due to the opening of the ATOC and the consolidation of programs and students there. The Security Department will flex accordingly and attempt to manage patrol and staffing at each campus area. The parking lots continue to be a source of difficultly because of the burglaries ( thefts from cars) and criminal damage to cars. We attempt to double the staffing in the lots whenever possible. Please continue to use good judgment and not leave valuables in clear view of potential thieves.

Security Tips: Be prepared for winter driving. Keep a blanket, small shovel, candle & matches, flares, battery jumper cables or a quick start power cell in your car. Make sure to have a car adapter power source in your car for your cell phone. Don't have a cell phone? Try and get one!

We are continuing to experience burglaries from vehicles parked in the campus lots.We have assigned an additional patrol car during the day shift and on most days have (3) vehicles assigned to the lots. The offenders are taking stereo equipment, CD disks and any valuables within the cars. Please don't leave valuables in plain view within your cars. Within the next few weeks, we will be flexing our personnel from the other shifts to accommodate the increased demands of the college due to the opening of the ATOC and additional programs.

Security Tips: Don't hesitate to call security for an escort should have concerns about walking to your car alone and in the dark.Call Security if you think you see suspicious behavior by any person on the campus property.Take a few moments to look at the evacuation routes posted in the offices, classrooms and in the hallways. Review the Emergencey Procedures which are posted in each office and classroom all over the campus.

We are reassigning two full time officers from the midnight shift to supplement the day and afternoon shifts. This move should allow us to meet the increased demands for services and accommodate the needs of the ATOC complex. Additionally, we will be taking more aggressive patrol initiative in the parking lots to deter the vehicle burglaries. We will ticket student vehicles parked in the Staff lot and station an officer near the South entry to the main building to prevent traffic congestion due to students being dropped off there. Our in-service training series on the use of force will continue and the next session will be on "Verbal Judo".

Security Tip: Winter driving demands that we take proper precautions during severe cold weather. Make sure you keep a full tank of gas just in case you're stuck in the snow and help can't reach you quickly. Keep road flares, a small shovel, blanket, a few snacks, a candle or two and matches in your trunk, just in case you are out there for and extended period of time. ( small candle can produce a source of heat..........open your window just a wee bit)

We have reassigned two full time Officers from the midnight shift to the day and afternoon shifts. This move has already been effective in allowing for the unexpected staffing of the newly opened Child Care Center. We completed a series of training on the use of force with a session on Verbal Judo. Our next training session will be a refresher course in CPR, First Aid and the use of the AED heart machine. We have frequent refresher courses in these matters to assure that all of our officers are competent in life saving skills.

Security Tips: Cell phones are an invaluable safety tool in the event of an emergency and particularly during the winter months and severe weather conditions. Make it a point to keep your cell phone battery charged and with you while driving in severe weather. Did you know that your cell phone signal can be tracked by providers? Depending on jurisdictional areas and cell phone companies your location may be determined down to a matter of yards.

We are experiencing a change in the demeanor and behavior of some students during the day and early afternoon. We have taken steps to have an officer within the Atrium and cafeteria during peak activity times to curtail noise and other violations of school conduct . Please understand that other areas of the campus demand our attention and resources. We will make every effort to provide efficient service and security for the entire campus.

Security Tips: Help our security help you and immediately report suspicious persons and behavior right away. Report safety hazards, insufficient lighting in hallways and parking lots or classroom doors left open.

This week I was instructed to deploy the security officer(s) assigned to the Health/Technical Center, to the Adult Training Center. The change is necessary due to the increase in the student population at the ATOC and the need to closely monitor the behavior of a minority of the students there. I have advised the security officers on the day and afternoon shifts to make frequent personal checks at the HTC building. We are continuing to adjust our resources to accommodate the security needs of the entire campus.

Security Tips: The security phones in the hallways can be used to reach security. Our number is 3756. In the evenings after 10:00 P.M., if you call 3756, it is forwarded to 708.912.0963; the numberto a cell phone carried by a security officer. You may utilize the emergency call boxes found in each of the parking lots to reach a security officer.
